Breathe
Breathe
VERSE
Look under windows of the towers, skyscrapers
machinery cloud the beauty painted by our makers
deep in the ocean, we see no more room
above the waves we try to find a new home
There’s always pain, when you turn on the TV
I’m always waiting for somebody to save me
we hear the voices, we see all the signs
let’s chase the colors, we will be just fine
CHORUS
Take a step, and light the spark
Pick up the brush, and paint what’s in our heart
It’s up to us, let’s leave our mark
It’s not too late, to give this world a brand new start
VERSE
Look up the buildings and we see only grey
Imagine stars in blue skies every day
Down in these woods, the green fade away
can’t hope no longer, gotta heal the decay
This electronic pop song speaks of the environment around us. Throughout the song, an extended metaphor prevails: using color and paint to represent taking action to bring our world back to life. In recent years, especially, I started listening to the news, understanding the world around me and what was really going on. This process of breaking out of my cocoon of innocence as a child gradually brought me into the truth of our realities. The negativity spread over social media and the news was always filled with shock, apathy, and disappointment. It almost seemed to overpower the positive news that was happening as well at the same time. This song is thus separated into three main topics: Machinery and Urbanization, pollution and negative news. Commenting on these powerful and seemingly inevitable issues was a difficult task in getting to the heart of it and thus, I incorporated several metaphors and symbols such as in “Down in these woods, the green fade away”, a metaphor for deforestation, to allow listeners to form their own interpretation. As consumers of endless news information, we tend to gravitate towards news that’s negative rather than positive. Rooted in evolutionary biology, research suggests and some have even shown that humans may be neurologically and physiologically predisposed towards focusing on negative information because it is more evolutionarily advantageous to prioritize negative information. “There’s always pain, when you turn on the TV/ I’m always waiting for somebody to save me” is a line that demonstrates what happens when we consume a lot of negative news: developing the feeling of helplessness and a lack of courage.
Although I wanted to shine light on our current issues, I really wanted this song to be positive and encouraging. In the chorus, I wanted to motivate and inspire listeners to take action and admire the beauty in our world because it is not too late “to give this world a brand new start.”
