Love Yourself
Love Yourself
VERSE
When.. I’m standing right in front of the mirror
Perfection cant be found in this figure
Want all that and more, to fit in the mold they want but what for?
[ so ] How... do people look and just walk away
Without stoppin to see in a different way
gotta find the truth but can you hear what they say?
CHORUS
I’m lost in the currents
Trying to find me(in)these moments
maybe I can’t dance with the waves
Or look like those girls on display now
But I’ll love myself unafraid
Yea I’ll see my light from the grays
VERSE
Now… i’m takin off this makeup, this cover
I wanna show the world my true colors
I may be imperfect, but now i know i’m perfect for me
Sing, the songs that I’ve hiding inside
I’m wiping away all of tears i’ve cried
no, I’m not alone, if you need it then hear me say
CHORUS
I’m lost in the currents
Trying to find me(in)these moments (melody variation on second time of chorus)
maybe I can’t dance with the waves
Or look like those girls on display now
But I’ll love myself unafraid
Yea I’ll see my light from the grays
BRIDGE
You are you
I am me
We are different and that’s okay
Cuz at the end of the day
I know that I am
Unique in my own way
What this means to me
In this stripped down, soulful melody, I introduce two ideas: the idea of “perfection'' in beauty that has set a standard in society and the insecurities that root from within and overcoming them. The influence of social media is one that nearly everyone has experienced, unconsciously forming a shared standard of “perfection” and raising many issues from our personal insecurities. I wanted this song to take a step back from all the information and be tuned with myself as we often lose sight of what is important and never become satisfied with oneself. Thus, I wanted to share my feelings and also words of encouragement. I wanted the song to demonstrate a development of becoming confident with myself and showing my true colors to the world. I especially like to use metaphors and similes to present my inner emotions and, more importantly, offer a more interpretive element to it.
For example, the phrase “walk away” is figurative for people’s perceptions of others, often beginning with judgement before seeking to discover who they are from different perspectives. Additionally, the line: “maybe I can’t dance with the waves” is representative of how, perhaps I’m not like everybody else and can’t fit in the crowd and “this cover” symbolizes the protection one feels with an armor of makeup.
