“Hey, did you see…?”

Mixed Media (collage, drawing)
I wanted this work to humorously capture gossip and shed light on the effects of fake news and the media industry in shaping our values on the news that we hear. The piece is made up of layers from a collage of newspapers and magazines in black and white shown through the ripped white, then yellow paper that layers on top. I used Tiger Beat and J-14 magazines, teen fan magazines that spread celebrity gossip, and fake news such as one with the title of: “Martians Invade Earth”. The caricatures above the black silhouette of a couch were inspired by the works of Picasso and George Condo were I experimented with exaggerated expressions to capture curiosity and the reactions to gossip. Newspapers in the bottom half of the piece, however, feature news that was published by more reliable sources. There, I wanted to create a hierarchy showing how fake news can overpower news.
