Where I’m From
This song takes me back down memory lane when I was living in my beloved hometown in Xiamen, China. It talks about my journey of moving from Xiamen to Hong Kong and how no matter where I am, I will be always grateful for who I am and where I am now. I wanted to explore my identity by writing about memories of my childhood that I remember most fondly and those that shape who I am today. The most genuine, fascinating memories lie as a child and the origins of who I am carry me forward. At the same time, this song is also dedicated to my parents who sacrificed much of their time and left their homes and business in order to provide me and my sister a better future. While this song is personal at heart, I want to dedicate this song to the many migrants in the world who share similar experiences and feelings, that of homesickness but also gratefulness for having gotten to where we are today.
VERSE
Flying kites
Skating down the road
Chasin lights
For hours outside your home
Black and white
Pickin seashells off the beach
All the times
We spent as family
PRE-CHORUS
Wish that i could capture everything
Cause it’s history before my eyes
CHORUS
I’ve cried many rivers
I’ve fought through some pain
I’ve loved and i’ve lost and
I’ve made some mistakes
But i’ll never forget that
My heart will stay safe
As long as i remember where i’m from
I’ve laughed by the oceans
I’ve overcome hate
I’ve loved with my all and
Gave more than i made
I never forgot that
My heart’s always safe
As long as i remember where i’m from
